Nis Fortress

The existing fortification is of Ottoman origin, dating from the 1719 – 1723. IT was erected on the site of earlier the ancient Roman, and Medieval forts.

On February 19, 1719, the Ottoman Sultan ordered the construction of a strong fortress in Nis. In the spring of the same year work began on the project of the chief architect Mehmed aga and his brother Mustafa aga, which were the main organizers of the project. In the first year of construction they hired tens of thousands of spahias from ten sandzaks of the Rumelia beglerbegluk, and in 1722 from 14 sandzaks more. In the last year of the construction of the ramparts 40 master stonemasons were brought from Constantinople, and the ramparts were built by 400 masons. The completion of the works was celebrated by ceremonies and the installation of a plaque with the inscription on the Istanbul Gate, in June 1723.
